The beginning

At the turn of the century which was in the 1920s people became more interested in fads and the fashion trends of the century. They thought this to be because people would focus more on the fashion trends than what happened in the war. No one knows for sure how fads become so popular but suddenly people become interested in dance, fashion, games, sports, and other activities.  

Fads

Fads however do not last long and are often dropped as soon as they start. Many of the fads came into Canada from the United States in the 1920s. The Twenties were said to be the beginning of mass media. New technology was being produced like radio broadcasting, newspapers, glossy magazines, billboards, and movies. Canadians admired New York, bought American made vacuum cleaners and other appliances, and watched American movies. Soon Canadians became uneasy on America's influence on Canada's life and culture, but it wasn't till the 1930's that the Canadian government took some steps to counter foreign influences. The first fad of the 1920s was a Chinese game of Mahjong Mahjong. It was a combination of dice and dominoes. Every home across North America had this game and Mahjong parties were very common. The fad wore off by 1927 and it was time for a new one. The new fad was crossword puzzles. Two American publishers brought out a book with crosswords and a pencil attached. Dictionary sales roared and even some railway provided dictionary to help traveler solve crossword puzzles. Making records became very popular in the 1920s and some people made contests of every kind(racing, talking, kissing, drinking, flagpole sitting, and rocking-chair marathons were some of the contests which people tried to establish records). Of all the marathons dancing was the real rage. Dancers competed for prizes and thousands of dollars. It was such a big thing that a man actually dies on the dance floor after dancing for 87 hours. 

Dance

Dances were a very big fad in the 1920s. There were such dances as the bunny hug, the Charleston, the Shimmy and the Black button. People seemed to go out on their Saturdays and go to dance clubs to have dance competitions and marathons. As the years go on we still find that Dance is very popular.

Fashion

Fashion also swept over North America. It was mostly pin pointed on the women of 1920s. The first fashion that seemed to come to Canada was the flapper look. A flapper was a young woman who wore outrageous clothes. In the winter time she wore galoshes with buckles unfastened to create greatest possible flap. Hemlines rose above the knees and silk stockings were rolled down. Long hair was cut into a bobbed style. Fashion for a young man was just as outrageous. He often sported baggy pants or knickers, a bright snappy hat, and a bow tie. Movies seemed to be inspirational to some young people and men often slicked back there hair and parted it in the middle to imitate the popular movie idols of the day. Most Canadians admired these fashion trends from afar because they weren't wealthy enough or not daring enough to wear these latest trends.

A flapper 

A flapper was a young woman who wore outrageous clothes, had their long hair cut short to make a bobbed style, listened to the new jazz, and flaunted their disdain to what was considered acceptable behavior.  The flappers were seen as brash for wearing excessive makeup, drinking, treating sex as a casual manner, smoking, driving automobiles, and otherwise flouting conventional social and sexual norms.

It all began in 1894: 

- The first radio couldn't transmit sound or speech and was called the "wireless telegraph", the demonstration of wireless telegraphy was in the  lecture theater of  the Oxford University Museum of Natural History on August 14, 1894 presented by Professor Oliver Lodge and Alexander Muirhead.

-In 1895 Alexander Stepanovich Popov built the first radio receiver, which contained a coherer.

-The meaning and usage of the word "radio" has developed within the field and can be seen to have three distinct phases: 

1. Electromagnetic waves and experimentation.

2. Wireless communication and technical development.

3. Radio broadcasting and commercialization. 

-A lot of inventors, engineers, developers and businessmen helped to produce the modern idea of the radio.  

-The next great invention was the vacuum tube detector, invented by Westinghouse engineers. On Christmas Eve 1906. 

-There have been several people who are claimed to have "invented the radio" leading to a great radio controversy. The most common claimed are:

·                         Jaqadish Chandra Bose

·                         Guglielmo Marconi, who equipped ships with life-saving wireless communications, conducted a reported transatlantic radio communications experiments in 1901 and established the first commercial transatlantic radio service in 1907.

·                         Alexander Stepanovich Popov

·                         Nikola Tesla, who developed means to reliably produce radio frequency currents, publicly demonstrated the principles of radio, and transmitted long distance signals. In 1943 the US Supreme Court upheld Tesla's patent number U.S. Patent 645,576.

- On the 27 of August in 1920, regular wireless broadcasts for entertainment began in Argentina

- On the 31 of August in 1920, the first known radio news program was broadcast by station 8MK it was an unlicensed predecessor of WWJ (AM) in Detroit, Michigan.  

- In 1922 regular wireless broadcasts for entertainment began in the UK from the Marconi Research Centre 2MT at Writtle near Chelmsford England.

- Radios ran the power of the transmitter through a carbon microphone. In the 1920s, the Westinghouse company bought Lee De Forest's and Edwin Armstrong's patent. During the mid 1920s, Amplifying vacuum tubes (US)/thermionic valves ( UK) revolutionized radio receivers and transmitters. Westinghouse engineers developed a more modern vacuum tube. A vacuum tube is a device used to amplify or modify a signal by controlling the movement of electrons in an evacuated space.

- The radio was the great communication invention of the 1920's voices, news and music could be broadcasted across the country using signals it helped shrink Canada's vest size. 

- one in five canadian families owned a radio by 1929.

- People in isolated rural parts of the country were able to be in touch and up to date with what was going on in and around their rural area.

- In 1925, Edward.S. Rogers (a Canadian inventor) found a way of plugging the radio directly into a household electrical current. He was known as the first battery-less radio and it cost about $150. 

- by 1929 there were 85 small broadcasting stations in Canada.

- One of the most famous sport coster in Canadian history was Foster Hewitt. No one had ever don a play-by-play of a hockey game over the radio before people would listen to his excited calls  such as ... "he shoots! he scores!" In 1920's NHL hockey and Foster Hewitt became part of canadian history.

Canadian Sports of the 1920’s    

            The 1920’s were the Golden Age of Professional Sports in Canada.  Many sports were making the move from amateur to professional.  Some examples would be Hockey, Football, Basketball, and Baseball. 

Cities were becoming larger.  They could now afford larger arena’s and or sporting venue’s.  The NHL was formed in Canada in 1917 but in 1925 the first American team joined the league.  They were the Boston Bruins and after they joined it helped the NHL transform into the top professional league in North America.  But just because Americans now were involved most of the players were still Canadian, and still are today.

           

 Now here are some quick notes on some of the main focuses of sports in the 1920’s.

            Lionel Conacher

            -Most famous single athlete in Canada in the 1920’s

            -Wrestler, Boxer, Lacrosse, Hockey, Football, and Baseball star

            -1922 championship games competed in two events

            -Hit a triple in the last inning of the Baseball championship

            -same day scored four points in the Lacrosse Championship

            -played on the 1922 Toronto Argonauts

            -won 1922 grey cup scoring 15 points in the 23-0 win

            Edmonton Grads

            -All women’s Basketball team

            -Greatest women’s basketball team to ever step on the floor

            -Dominated Basketball scene from 1915-1940

            -They played 522 games and lost only 20

            -Represented Canada at four Olympics

            -Won 27 consecutive games at the Olympics

-Dr. James Naismith (creator of basketball) named the Grads as the best basketball team of All Time.

-The best Female athlete of the first half century

-Star at Basketball, Hockey, Softball, Tennis, and Track

-Greatest Triumphs at Amsterdam Olympics of 1928

-Won Silver in 100 meter dash

-Won Gold in 400 meter relay

-Fifth place in the 800 meter

-She scored more points for her country than any other athlete at the games (male or female)

Women in Government 

-Women in the 1920's still did not enjoy all the privileges men did. Although women had won the right to vote during the war, very few were elected to the House Of Commons, or to Provincial governments.

-In the 1921 Federal Election, Agnes MacPhail was the only woman elected. She  strongly supported women's rights and worked to improve conditions for farmers, minors and prisoners.

  

Women in the Workforce.

-In the 1920's women were still seen mainly as homemakers.They were expected to give up the jobs they had in the war and return to looking after there husbands and families.

-By 1929, women made up 20% of the workforce, but most worked in traditional female jobs, as domestic servants, secretaries, sales clerks, or factory workers. A majority of these women were single since employers expected women to give up their jobs when married.

Japanese and Chinese Woman

 

-Women from minority groups faced even greater challenges. Many employers discriminated against, chinese and japanese women, and woman of color. Employes simply would not hire them.

- As a result Japanese and Chinese woman weren't able to enter Canadian colleges, universities or hospitals.

-And many of these women could not find jobs outside of their own ethnic communities.

The Persons Case

-The Persons Case underlined the inequality women still faced.

-They asked the Supreme Court of Canada to declare that women were "persons" and therefore eligible to be appointed to the Senate. Unfortunately, the judges did not believe that women were persons under the Act.

-On October 18, 1929, the Privy Council declared that women are indeed persons.

Emily Murphy and The Government

-In 1916 Emily Murphy was made the first woman judge in the British Empire. and she was appointed to an Alberta court. A lawyer in her courtroom challenged her right to judge a case because she was a woman.

-In August 1927, Emily Murphy and four other prominent woman decided to petition the prime minister. The group of woman included Nellie McClung, Louise McKinnley, Henrietta Edwards, Irene Parlby and Judge Murphy.   

- In April 1928, the Supreme Court of Canada decided that women were not "persons" qualified for appointment to the Canadian Senate.
