Imgp3689_2 The event that truly welcomes the Grade 9s to DCVI - Genie Day!  Grade 9s were "purchased" by Grade 10-12 students who provided their "genies" with appropriate costumes.  Revenge will be had by the Grade 9s when "Reverse Genie Day" is held and the Grade 9s can "purchase" students from Grades 10 thru 12.  Enjoy the photos (including a couple of the "new teacher", Mr. Richardson's welcome from the students of DCVI).

Girls Field Hockey

The Salukis Field Hockey team has started its season with a win, loss and tie.  The team lost their opening game against St. Annes on September 17 by a score of 3-1.  The team learned a lot against this more experienced team, and was ready to take on their next opponent, Listowel, on September 24.  The team controlled the Lightening, and had many scoring opportunities.  Kelsey Robinson scored the lone marker for the Salukies, while Richelle Forrester had a pair of goals called back.  The game ended in a 1-1 tie.The team gained their first victory of the season Wednesday September 26 in Listowel playing against Mitchell.  Although the skies looked gloomy, the weather was perfect for field hockey.  The team came out strong in the first half, dominating play.  A goal by Rachel Weber stood up as the winner in a 1-0 victory.  Ashley Hibbert played a strong game in net, supported by the defensive unit of Alissa Fraser, Krysten Cardiff, Lauren Thomson and Lindsay Cubberley.  The team plays their only home game of the season on Monday afternoon at 4:30pm.  Come on out to cheer on your Salukis!

Junior Boys Volleyball

The Salukis Junior Boys Volleyball team played their first league games of the 2007 Huron-Perth season at home on Thursday, September 26th against F.E. Madill from Wingham, and South Huron from Exeter.  The team got off to a good start against Madill due to the serving of Millar Coles, but couldn’t find a way to finish off with a victory.  Highlights of the match included a thunderous hit from Brent Rae out of the middle position and strong passing from the back court.  All three of the sets were close, with scores of 25-20, 25-21, and 25-19.

In the match against South Huron, tough serving proved to be too strong for the young Saluki squad.  The team got behind quickly and couldn’t dig their way out despite solid passing from Calvin Penny in the back row.  Josh Bishop-Moffatt was able to hit down a couple of nice balls that proved too much for the Panthers.

With only one returning player from last year, and nine grade nines, the team spent much of the afternoon learning their positions, and figuring out where they should be on the court.  Overall, their coach was pleased with the improvements he saw throughout the day.

Members of this years team are: Scott Anderson, Millar Coles, Dillon Drinkwalter, Brett Hyatt, Kyle Mansfield, Justin Marriott, Travis McEwan, Josh Bishop-Moffatt, Calvin Penny, Brent Rae, T.J. Spence, and Nick Tybik.

Upcoming games:

Senior Girls Basketball

On Wednesday, September 19, the senior girls basketball team opened the Huron-Perth season at home versus South Huron. The team had a poor start in the first quarter, falling behind 11-3.  However the girls started to apply strong defensive pressure and adjusted to South Huron’s zone defense and were down only 3, 14 - 17, at the half.  The Salukis continued to play well in the second and won 34 - 31.

This past weekend the senior girls traveled to the Ridley College tournament in St Catherines. In their first game on Friday, Sept 21, the Salukis played Parkside from Dundas.  The team started slowly and although down at the half, was able to tie the game 18-18 in the third quarter.  Parkside went on a hot streak in the last quarter and won a low scoring game 29-20.  Eight players scored in the game. St Marys then played their next game on the consolation side of the draw against A.N. Meyer from Niagara Falls.  Down 11-2 after one quarter, St Marys increased their defensive pressure over the remaining three quarters and displayed great teamwork in losing 53-37.  In their final game of the tournament, St Marys played Holy Cross from St Catherines and again used great defense and made their foul shoots to stay in the game until they were able to go ahead late in the game and won 41-40.

Team members are Brittany Sterkenburg, Andrea Payton, Lauren Stacey, Catherine Wallis, Brittanie Bailey, Stacey Anderson, Jessica Jones, Stephanie Hairsine, Amy Switzer, Sarah Kennedy, Elline Haanstra. Coaches are Andy Hairsine and Scott Shaddick.

Next league game is at CHSS in Clinton on Wednesday, Sept 27.  The team travels to Toronto this weekend for the U of T tournament.
