Team Shan

Shanlarsen The Team Shan Community Project  (breast cancer awareness in young women) is dedicated to raising awareness of breast cancer in young women (15-29 years).  The goals are to increase early detection of breast cancer and to improve outcomes for young women diagnosed with breast cancer.  The project is funded by the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation-Ontario Chapter.  Community and professional partners have assisted with the project.

Activities for the fall in the Avon Maitland Schools include the dissemination of resource materials and social marketing of the project theme: breast cancer…not just a disease of older women.  A comprehensive, multi-media awareness campaign will also be implemented in the London and Oxford County areas.Social marketing strategies include the use of billboards, bus/bus shelter ads and radio, television and print media will be part of the campaign.

Teamshanlogo The project is in memory of Shanna (Shan) Larsen who was only 24 when she lost her life to breast cancer.   Shan was an aspiring teacher, talented artist, and skilled athlete.  She graduated from Western (UWO) with a Bachleor of Arts, Honours Visual Arts degree.  The Team Shan logo and sunflower graphics on the awareness materials were created from Shan’s original artwork.

Thank you for your support of the project and our efforts to make a difference for young women following in Shan’s footsteps.

Thank you

Junior Girls Basketball

The Junior Girls Basketball Team played 2 fantastic games yesterday. In the first game they defeated Listowel 34-27. This game was extremely close from start to finish with our girls only up by 1 point at the half. The girls took over in the second half and did an excellent job of dictating the play to win the second half outscoring Listowel 21-15. Top scorers of this game were Sarah Edye and Nicole Barber both with 10 points. Melanie Heard and Emma Hendriksen were our rebounding specialist for this game along with awesome defense from Julie McPhail,Rachel Westlaken, and Kelcie Hunter.

In the second game, the girls defeated Mitchell 25-20. The girls fought back to come from behind and win this game. At half-time of this game the girls were down 17-6. In the second half, the girls regained their confidence with their full court pressure scoring 19 points and only allowing 3 points for Mitchell. Top scores were Nicole Barber with 12 points and Sarah Edye with 10 points.
Rachel Westlaken and Julie McPhail scored 2 critical free throws in the second half and Julie added a basket of her own. Megan Fennema, and Abbey Lingelbach, did an excellent job forcing Mitchell to turnover the ball,  and again Emma Hendriksen and Katty Doucette were enforcers under our own basketball.

Finally, the girls had an opportunity to appreciate all their hard work and dedication to early morning practices.

Great day yesterday team!!
