Senior Girls Basketball
Last Wednesday the senior Salukis traveled to Clinton to play CHSS. St Marys jumped out to a 17-6 lead after one quarter and increased it to 23-8 at the half. The team continued to work on its defense and offensive plays en route to a 38-20 win. Scorers were Stephanie Hairsine with 14 pts, Brittanie Bailey 8 pts and Brittany Sterkenburg, Catherine Wallis, Andrea Payton, Eline Haanstra each scored 4 pts.The team improved its Huron-Perth record to 2 and 0.
This past weekend, Saturday, Sept 29, St Marys competed in the University of Toronto Basketball Festival. Thirty-two teams played in the sports complex at U of T on seven full size courts. The teams were divided into eight pools of four teams each. Each game is divided into two 12 minute halfs. In their first pool game the Salukis defeated King City HS 23-6. The second game was a 30-22 defeat to Winston Churchill Collegiate from Toronto. In their final pool game St Marys defeated Heart Lake HS from Brampton 27-20 to place second in their pool.
In a Division II quarter final game against Fr. John Redmond SS from Etobicoke, the senior Salukis won 20-15. In the semifinal and their last game of the festival, St Marys lost to a quick team, Senator O’Connor SS from Toronto 31-22. The Salukis played a variety of teams and continued to improve throughout the day.
The team plays its next games two games Monday, Oct 1 at Stratford Central versus the host Rams and visiting FE Madill from Wingham.
