Earth Hour

At 8pm on March 29th 2008, cities and towns around the world will be turning off their lights for one hour - Earth Hour- sending a powerful national and global message that it is possible to take action on global warming. Tell a friend about this global initiative and spread the word around the community of St. Marys. For more information visit the website, www.earthhour.org. Here you can sign up your household and see all the other people participating throughout the WORLD!

This is all fine and dandy if you believe that global warming is a threat and/or serious issue. Personally I do not think it will help all too much. I just do not see global warming and an energy crisis as serious threats to the planet and human race. Turning off the lights seems frugal. Any other thoughts on this matter?

Well... your just ******** your kids and grand kids futures by helping fuel myths and ledgends of Global Warming/ Climate Change. Also not participating in events such as the Earth Hour. I can't understand how all of these events and organiztions like Flick Off and Earth Hour have so many people participating and behind them that you still can't see it as an issue or problem. Also if you already haven't noticed the rising gas prices and blackouts last year maybe you should open your eyes. We are on the brink of an energy problem and we should be finding ways to use alternative and re-useable energy sources like Solar and Wind. Take examples from all the Hollywood stars that we feel the need to emmulate so much these days and follow people like Jack Johnson who recorded his new album in a Solar powered studio or the band Radiohead who hate touring even though they play amazing live shows(or so i've herd) just to minimize their Eco-Footprint.Anyway even if turning off the lights for an hour does only save money like you think, your parents will still save some money. I happen to think that this Earth Hour will show us what can happen when we turn off our Xbox's and our computers that we so heavily rely on and spend some time with family or read by candle light.

I agree and disagree with both of you. We are on the brink of a energy crisis, but none of that makes global warming true. We all have to stop acting like mindless sheep and believing everything we hear, we all have a mind, opinion and voice lets start using them.

Wow. Earth Hour sure was exciting (not). What a waste of time and a flawed premise.

Personally I was very dissapointed, London had the lowest energy decrease in all of CANADA! Only 2%, while Toronto was 9%, even if the grocery stores and shops had turned off just a few rows of lights it would have made a good impact, the independant especially uses so much power! I wish St. Marys had participated better, I mean its not just our future we are trying to save, its everyone's and therefor I think it should be everyone's responsibility to at least make an effort to help our planet. There are lots of little ways we can make a huge impact on our environment!

Dear unconvinced and anyone else who sees flaws in earth hour,
even if you think it is a waste of time, and that global warming and the energy crisis are myths, why not take part for the sake of turning off your dependency on electricity for an hour?
while citizens of st. marys were saying weeks before earth hour, "no one will take part, therefore it will not be successful", were they notonly proving their point by not taking part in it themselves?
another thing, doesn't it feel nice to take part in something with the rest of the world? to know that while you are sitting in the dark, so are people in China, Pakistan, Mexico, France and everywhere else?
while i cannot convince you that global warming is a serious threat, i can point out that sometimes you need to be willing to try something new.
if you want to see the change, be the change!
