Report Cards

Report Cards were issued to students today.  Students and their parents are asked to complete page 2 of the report card no later than Monday May 5th.  Please return this page along with the signature of a parent/guardian to your first period teacher.  Each student was also given a copy of the April Newsletter.

Environthon Team

Environment
On April 29th two teams from DCVI spent the day at the Pinery Provincial Park competing in the region Envirothon competition.  Each team prepared a presentation attempting to balance the needs of the public and the mandate of the park to provide recreation opportunities with the need to protect the endangered Piping Plover which has been sited at the park.  The teams were also tested on their knowledge of soils, aquatics, wildlife and forestry at workstations throughout the park.  For it being the first year in the competition for the school, the team performed very well.  Anyone interested in competing next year for the school should pay attention to announcements next March.

Senior Girls Soccer

The Salukis Senior Girls Soccer team continued their winning ways Tuesday with a pair of victories in Mitchell.  The team opened with a 2-0 win over Mitchell.  The girls controlled the field and created many scoring opportunities.  Goal scorers were Candra Staffen and Lauren Stacey.  In the second game against South Huron, the Salukis came out strong and dominated the play for the entire game.   Strong passes and great communication resulted in a balanced attack.  Lauren Stacey netted two goals, with Jane Hendriksen and Candra Staffen adding singles.  Assisted by a strong defensive unit, goalie Sarah Kennedy notched her fourth straight shut out in Huron Perth league play.   Brittany Sterkenburg and Claire Jackson were strong on the outside, making some brilliant crosses.  The team plays again on Tuesday May 6 in Listowel against LDSS and St. Annes.

Junior WOSSAA Badminton

Yesterday at the Junior WOSSAA Badminton Championships, the Salukis doubles pairing of Nate Cookson and Adam Cornwall played extremely well against some top competitors.

The pair, having finished fourth last week at the Huron-Perth Championships, started the day off against the top team in their division, AB Lucas from London. After a slow start and some nerves getting the better of them in the opening game, the boys settled down and played a much more focused and intense game the second time up, but it wasn’t enough to beat the number one seeds.

Now on the B-side, they had to win in order to stay alive in the competition. Their next match pitted them against St. Joe’s number one team. The combination of Nate’s power game and Adam’s finesse allowed the pair to take control of the match. Their combination game proved to be too much for their opponents, who not only lost their cool on the court, but also the match to DCVI.

Now into their third round of play, Adam and Nate came up against St. Thomas Aquinas, or S.T.A. for short. Again they got off to a shaky start, rushing their shots, or trying too hard to get it to the sidelines, resulting in some costly giveaways. However, after dropping the opening game, they re-grouped and took it to STA in the second game, winning easily and with confidence.

The deciding game of the match was well played by both teams. It featured excellent serving, fast and furious exchanges, smashes, unbelievable returns and subtle net play. Unfortunately for Nate and Adam, they were just four points short, losing 21-17. And with that loss, they were out of the championship.

After the match, the pair discovered that STA was the number two seed in their division, and they had come extremely close to defeating them. So in the end, with some bad luck in the draw, it took the best two teams at the championships to beat them, and even then, it was close.

Congratulations to Nate and Adam and the rest of the Junior team on a great season.

Grad Bios

Superfrayne_edited2 Grad bios for the  yearbook will be collected on Wednesday, April 30 - period 2.  Be prepared by thinking about the following:  Nick Name; Pet Peeve; Best Memory; Favorite Saying; Probable Destination.

Grads will also be able to choose the grad photo pose you want in the yearbook.  Look at your proofs and look for the proof number.  On April 30, you can indicate the proof number on your grad bio.  If you do not indicate the proof number, the pose provided to the school by ADANAC images will be used.

Junior Girls Soccer

The junior girls soccer team began their season yesterday with a very tough two games against St. Mike’s and Stratford Central.  However, the girls were up to the challenge with a 2-1 win over St. Mike’s and a nil-nil draw with Stratford Central.

The girls were dominant against St. Mike’s and were unfortunate to be down at half.  However, a quick response by Daniek Donkers leveled the game, and Sarah Edye scored to game winner off of a brilliant cross by Kelsea Schaefer.  The players of the game were Lara Middleton and Nicole Barber who both were dominant on defence, shutting down the St. Mike’s attack.

In the second game the girls faced off against and very strong Stratford Central team.  It was an outstanding game as both teams played a very balanced game.  Neither team could crack the other’s defence and the game ended scoreless.  Lindsay Cubberly controlled the middle of the park, making outstanding tackle after outstanding tackle; while Kelsey Robinson was the player of the game, controlling the penalty area and making several huge saves.

Senior Girls Soccer

The DCVI Senior Girls Soccer team kicked off the Huron-Perth regular season with a pair of wins in Clinton on Tuesday.  The team opened with a strong 1-0 victory over the host Central Huron team.  Jane Hendriksen scored the winning goal for the Salukis.  In the second game, the team came out strong against Northwestern, and again fought to a 1-0 victory.  Richelle Forrester notched the winner for the Lukes.  Both games saw many offensive chances for DCVI, hitting the post on numerous occassions.  Great crosses by Lauren Stacey and Brittany Sterkenburg helped keep the opposing teams defense on alert.   Nicole Meta helped control the middle of the field, and the defensive unit of Steph Hairsine, Lauren Thomson, Kierstin Myers and Lisa Nethercott limited the chances of the opposition.  Goalie Sarah Kennedy played aggressively, earning both shutouts.  Great play girls!

Huron-Perth Junior Badminton

Yesterday at the Huron-Perth Junior Badminton Championships, the various Salukis pairs and singles represented their school well on the courts.

In Boys Singles, Djordy Donkers ended up competing against teammate Jessy Baker in the second round of play.  Djordy won the contest and advanced two more rounds before being eliminated.

In Girls Doubles, the two DCVI teams once again faced off against one and other, though in the third round this time out.  Jossie Hendry and partner Jessica Clarke lost the bragging battle, but had beaten Mitchell earlier in the day to make it that far.  Catelyn Kittmer and Jo-Ellen Ellis, having already beaten GDCI and their teammates, then had to immediately play Listowel.  They played a great game of precision placement, but the better rested LDSS pair took the match.

In Mixed Doubles action, Becky Webb and Warren Hyatt played well, but went out in two straight.  Meanwhile, the duo of Rachel Conn and Joey Siddall won their opening bout but then had to face the number one seed from South Huron.  After dropping to the B-side, they then faced yet another strong pair from Central Huron and were put out of the competition.

In the Boys Doubles division, Allan Alderton and Eric Lindsay played two extremely competitive matches, but didn’t advance any further.  The final DCVI pair of Adam Cornwall and Nate Cookson made it to the quarter-finals on the A-side, defeating Goderich and St. Anne’s.  After losing to South Huron and going to the B-side, Adam and Nate continued to advance into the final four.  In their final match, against St. Michael, the pair played well, but lost two close games, by just three points altogether.

Nate and Adam did qualify for the WOSSAA Championships next week in London.

Congratulations to the entire team on a great day and season!
