Huron Perth Senior Girls Soccer

Soccer_024_3 The senior girls soccer team played in the Huron-Perth semi finals Tuesday in Goderich.  After finishing in third place after the regular season, the team met second place St. Mikes in the semis.  The girls played a solid first half against the strong wind, and came out of the half down 1-0.  The team had numerous chances towards the end of the first half, but were unable to capitalize.  Hoping to use the wind to their advantage in the second half, the team came out strong, but again were unable to find the net.  St. Mikes scored an insurance goal with 10 minutes left to seal the victory.  The Warriors went on to beat first place Goderich in the final later Tuesday afternoon.

The Salukis now prepare for the WOSSAA 'A' championships in Tilsonburg on Tuesday June 3.

WOSSAA Track & Field

Millar2 There were awesome performances and great results for DCVI at the WOSSAA Track and Field Championships last week in London. Last Thursday and Friday, May 22nd and 23rd, 17 members of the T&F team went to TD Waterhouse Stadium at the University of Western Ontario to compete in the regional championships.

Tyler Rae had two amazing races over the two days and captured a silver and a gold for his efforts. On day one, Tyler ran a perfect race in the Senior Boys 1500m. While the leader, Darcy Wilson from Stratford Central, was just too strong, Tyler sprinted passed three other runners in the final 150m to capture second place. Tyler took six seconds off his best time in this event (4:17.20).

The next day, Tyler once again ran a perfect race, this time in the 3000m. After a sprint start for the first 75m, the race was off and a good pace was set. Running a tactically great race, Tyler never let the various leaders ever get too far out in front. With just 800m remaining, Tyler and a runner from Banting separated from the rest of the field and it was a two-man race. Then, as he has done in the 1500, Tyler pulled out and passed on the final turn, and sprinted to a 20m or more victory. Not only did he win the gold in convincing fashion, but he also posted a personal best time of 9:25.58 seconds, shaving six seconds off his qualifying time.

Seth Coddington had great results in Junior Boys Shot Put. Improving with every throw, after his first three throws, Seth qualified for the top eight and a second round of throws in the event. Two throws later, and still improving, Seth threw his personal best of 13.13m, almost 1.5 m better then ever before. That throw earned him a third place and the bronze medal. In the same event, Brent Rae just missed the top eight by centimetres, to finish 9th overall.

Seth also competed in Discus, and had thrown a personal best there too (33.98m). That was enough for a top eight finish. Brent was once again just behind his teammate with a throw of 33.92m, and took 9th once more.

In his final event, Seth ran well in the 300m Hurdles, competing with the best in the event. While he finished sixth in his heat, he was 7th overall with a time of 46.04 seconds. In Junior Javelin, Brent’s final event, he had a good opening throw, but faulted on it. His next two attempts weren’t as strong and he finished up in 11th place.

In the Midget Boys division, it was Millar Coles who put St. Marys on the map. He and Kyle Mansfield were both competing in Discus. Kyle had great preliminary practice throws, but it was Millar who threw another personal best of 34.93m, two metres further than any of his previous attempts. That throw earned him 5th place overall in the competition.

While JB Moffatt did not qualify in the Midget Boys 1500m, finishing 17th overall, it was noteworthy because he ran 14 seconds faster at WOSSAA (4:59.39s) than he had at Huron-Perth. Likewise, Adam Cornwall, in the Junior Boys 3000m, ran a great race and took 14 seconds off his time too, to finish 8th (10:09.67). This moved Adam up five places in the standings.

In other results, DCVI had Darion Cross finish 12th in the Junior Boys 800m (58.40 sec); Aaron Leyser in Junior Boys Triple Jump ended the day in 19th (10.15 m); Adam Cornwall, a junior competing in the Open Steeplechase, ran it in 7:26.24 seconds to finish 18th overall. The Junior Boys 4 x 100m Relay team (Seth, Brent, Darion and Aaron) shaved a second off their time and moved from 12th to 9th in the standings. The Senior Boys Relay team (Cameron Denham, Reece Fuhr, Kyle Gibson and Adam Kittmer) also improved in the standings, moving from 20th to 17th, and running a second and a half faster than before (54.10 sec).

Unfortunately, due to illness or injury, Darion had to scratch from his second event, the 800m. Likewise, Sarah Edye was unable to compete in either the 400m or the 300m hurdles and Caroline Cookson had to withdraw from Midget Girls High Jump.

Tyler Rae (1500m and 3000m), Seth Coddington (Shot Put) and Millar Coles (Discus) will now all go on to compete at the OFSAA West Regional Championships this week. Held once again at TD Waterhouse, Tyler will run his 1500 on Friday, May 30th, at 7:00 pm. The next day, Seth starts things off at 10:00 am, followed by Millar at 1:15 pm for discus. Tyler finishes off the day with his 3000m scheduled for a 4:30 pm start.

Senior Girls Soccer

The senior girls soccer team finished off the Huron-Perth regular season with a win and a loss at home Tuesday.

In the first game against first place Goderich Vikings, the girls got down two goals quickly on a few unfortunate plays.  The team couldn't find their stride against a very strong Goderich team, and despite stepping up their game in the second half, they took their second loss of the season.

In the afternoon game against FE Madill, the team was determined to prove that they belong at the top of the league.  The girls played a well-balanced game, with strong defensive plays and many offensive opportunities.  The smart passing and communication frustrated the Madill players throughout the game.  The forwards pressed the goalie hard and were rewarded with three goals.  Lauren Stacey scored twice for the Salukis while Candra Staffen added a single.  Claire Jackson, Katie Curtis and Andrea Payton controlled the midfield well, while Stephanie Hairsine and Lisa Nethercott worked together to minimize any chances the Wingham players created. Goalie Sarah Kennedy earned her seventh shutout on the season.

This win secured third place ahead of Madill in the Huron-Perth league.  The team ended with an impressive record of 8 wins and 2 losses.  The team travels to the Huron-Perth semi-finals on Tuesday May 27 in either Goderich or Stratford.  They have also secured a birth in the WOSSAA 'A' championships as the Huron-Perth #2 seed behind Goderich to be held in London on Tuesday June 3.

Huron-Perth Track & Field

Last Tuesday and Wednesday, May 13th and 14th, 28 members of the DCVI Track and Field team took part in the 43rd annual Huron-Perth Championships in Goderich. In the two days of exciting competition, the Salukis did themselves proud, with many qualifying for the next level of competition.

On day one, the weather was virtually perfect, with blue skies, the sun shining and virtually no wind to speak of. These ideal conditions resulted in some amazing performances and a number of new records. For St. Marys, the day saw many qualifying for WOSSAA as they finished in the top six in their events.

Some of the highlights from day one include: Sarah Edye’s 4th place finish in the Junior Girls 300m Hurdles, as well as Seth Coddington’s 1st place finish in the Junior Boys division in the same event. Later that day Adam Cornwall, a Junior, and Tyler Rae, a senior for DCVI, both posted 1st place finishes in their 3000m races. Meanwhile, in the field events, Brent Rae finished 4th in Junior Boys Javelin and Caroline Cookson took 3rd in the Midget Girls High Jump.

Day two was a full day of competition and the weather turned nasty. Cold, wet, windy and overall miserable was the forecast for the day. However the Salukis did not let it dampen their spirits. Darion Cross ran to a 2nd place finish in the Junior Boys 800m and finished 3rd in the 400m, while Sarah Edye qualified for her second WOSSAA event, this time in the 400m, finishing 3rd overall. In a very exciting 1500m race, Tyler Rae finished 2nd in the senior category and JB Moffatt 6th in the Midget Boys division. Adam Cornwall also ran to a 5th place finish in the Open Boys 2000m Steeplechase.

In the field events on day two, DCVI continued to show their stuff with some first rate performances from a wide range of athletes. In the Midget Boys High competition, DCVI had both Travis McEwan and Gord Cookson qualify for WOSSAA with 4th and 6th place finishes respectively. The Midget Boys continued their winning ways in the discus competition with Kyle Mansfield finishing 5th and Millar Coles throwing his way to a 1st place finish.

Not to be outdone, the Junior Boys also turned in some inspiring performances including a 3rd place finish for Aaron Leyser in High Jump and a 6th in Triple Jump. Also a 2nd and a 3rd for Seth Coddington and Brent Rae in the Shot Put competition and then later Brent and Seth finished 2nd and 4th in Junior Boys Discus.

To finish the day off, both the Junior (Darion, Adam, Seth and Brent) and Senior (Reece Fuhr, Adam Kittmer, Kyle Gibson and Tyler Rae) Boys Relay teams qualified for WOSSAA.

Overall, 16 members of the Salukis Track and Field team will be advancing. St. Marys took the Huron-Perth Junior Boys Team Title and Seth Coddington place 4th overall for the Individual title. There were also a number of other DCVI competitors who finished in 7th, just narrowly missing out on advancing to WOSSAA, which is to be held on Thursday and Friday, May 23rd and 24th, at UWO’s TD Waterhouse Stadium.

Valedictorian Nominations

Potential graduates are invited to recommend a classmate for the role of valedictorian.  After nominations have been made, there will be a ballot to decide upon your 2008 valedictorian.  Start thinking about who a strong candidate would be.  Nominations will be made in Grade 12 classes in the near future.  Check out the Student Services Blog for more information on the criteria for a strong valedictorian.

Senior Girls Soccer

The Salukis Senior Girls soccer team played their first home games of the season Monday at the DCVI fields.  The first match was against St. Mikes, in a battle of two unbeaten teams.  The girls played strong, especially in the second half, after making some adjustments to the lineup.   Sweeper Lisa Nethercott worked hard at clearing any balls that got through, and was supported with strong play by Nicole Meta.  Goalie Sarah Kennedy played strong in net, allowing only one goal. Despite numerous chances, the offence couldn't capitalize , and the team dropped a 1-0 loss to the Warriors.
In the second match of the day, the Salukis took on the Central Rams.  The team controlled the play, and the speed of forwards Lauren Stacey, Candra Staffen, Richelle Forrester and Jane Hendriksen was no match for the Central defense.  After breaking through the defense, Stacey fed a perfect pass to Staffen who was following close behind.  This put the Salukis up 1-0.  Forrester added to the lead with a left-footed ball lofted over the Rams goalie.  Together, the midfielders and defense shut down any Central attacks and the team finished with a 2-0 win.  This was Kennedy's sixth shutout on the season.
The team finishes off the regular season next Tuesday versus Goderich and F.E. Madill at the DCVI fields.

St. Anne's Track & Field

Last Thursday, May 8, 2008, the DCVI Track and Field Team participated in the St. Anne's Annual T&F Prep-Meet.  The 18 competitors from St. Marys had an awesome day on the track, in the pits and on the field, competing against 8 of the 10 schools in the Huron-Perth Conference.

Ten members of the team achieved a top six placing in 15 different events.  A top six performance is important because to make the top six at the Huron-Perth Championships, to be held at Goderich DCI on May 13th and 14th, would mean that they would advance to the next level of competition - WOSSAA.

Some of the highlights from the meet include:
- Seth Coddington's 2nd place throw of 13.54 m in Junior Shot Put and a 4th place finish in Junior Discus;
- Midget Boys' Millar Coles' first throw in a discus competition of 31.41 m, which earned him a 2nd place finish;
- Gord Cookson and Travis McEwan tieing for 4th in Midget Boys High Jump;
- Araon Leyser, a first year competitor in Track and Field, finishing 4th in Triple Jump, 3rd in Long Jump and winning the Junior Boys High Jump with a leap of 1.55 m;
- JB Moffatt, another Grade 9 Midget Boy athlete, finishing 4th in Discus and 3rd in the 1500 m;
- Brent Rae, who along with Seth made it to the OFSAA Regionals last year, finishing 4th in Shot Put and Javelin and 3rd in Discus at the Junior level;
- and Tyler Rae, who ran a great race in the Senior Boys 1500 m to finish in third and on the heels of the top two runners.

The entire team of 28 competitors will be heading to the Huron-Perth Championships in Goderich on Tuesday and Thursday, May 13th and 14th.  Events take off at 2:00 pm on Tuesday and at 9:00 am on Wednesday.

Senior Girls Soccer

The senior girls' soccer team improved their Huron-Perth record to 6-0 with a pair of wins in  Listowel on Tuesday.  The team came out sluggish against St. Annes in their first match of the day.  After an unfortunate "own" goal, the team rallied with three goals.  A beautiful cross by Lauren Stacey was knocked in by Candra Staffen.  Stacey scored again for the Salukis, and was also credited with a goal that was put in by a St. Annes player.  The final score of the game was 3-1.

In the second game against Listowel, the girls came out flying and dominated the play.  Midfielders Katie Curtis, Brittany Sterkenburg, Claire Jackson and Nicole Meta controlled the field and created many scoring opportunities.  Candra Staffen used her speed to score on a breakaway, while Nicole Meta scored on a corner kick, giving the Salukis a 2-0 victory.  Goalie Sarah Kennedy played well in both games, making some aggressive saves.

The team takes on St. Mike's and Stratford Central on Monday at home.  Game times are 9:00am and 2:30pm.
