The Salukis Track and Field team competed at the WOSSAA Championships last Thursday and Friday. The meet was held at TD Waterhouse Stadium at UWO and featured the best athletes from the 42 schools in the region. DCVI sent 19 competitors, who had qualified based on their results from the week before at the Huron-Perth Championships.
Only three Senior Salukis earned the right to compete at WOSSAA. Melanie Heard took part in Javelin
and finished 18thoverall. Tasha Rae was scheduled to run in both the 1500m and the 3000m but had to withdraw due to illness. The final Senior entrant for St. Marys was Ryan Poetker, who finished 11th in Shot Put.
There were a number of Juniors competing for DCVI, including Ryan Shaw who had qualified in three events. Ryan jumped a personal best in Triple Jump, finishing 15th, was 18th in Long Jump and finished in 13th in High Jump. Maria Leis was also to competed in three events, but had to withdraw from the 1500m and 3000m due to illness. In Triple Jump however, she did get her jumps in and finished 19th overall. Kristyn Armstrong also took part in Triple Jump and finished 13th. Deanna Kerekes was yet another Salukis involved in three different events. She broke into the top 10 in both the 1500m and the 3000m. In the 1500m, she improved on her personal best time by nearly
10 seconds to finish 9th and in the 3000m, she took an astonishing 52 seconds off her previously best time to finish 7th. Deanna also ran the 800m, finishing 11thand once more improved on her personal best time by 6 seconds. Stanley Froese competed in the 100m Hurdles, the
100m and the 200m. He finished 10th in Hurdles, qualified for the finals in the 100m and finished 14th in the 200m after pulling a muscle at the halfway mark in the race. In the 100m final, Stan finished 7th, missing out on 6thbu just 0.01 seconds. Connor Topp ran 2 seconds better than his qualifying time to finish 18th in the 400m. Kate-lin Douglas was the final Junior to compete for
St. Marys and she finished with a personal best time and in 11th place overall.
The Midgets were the mightiest for DCVI. Taylor Fawcett finished 17th in Shot Putt and then
threw almost a metre better than her Huron-Perth throws in Javelin to win the Bronze Medal. Travis Mann also took on the competition in two events. In the 1500m, he bested his best time by 16 seconds to finish in 7th. Then in Triple Jump, he made it into the extra
round and finished 8th, again improving on his previous personal best by almost 10 cm. Rhett Lucas finished 9th in the 100m and then took 0.55 seconds off his 200m time to qualify in the 7th position for the final. In the final, he again beat his previous time by another quarter of a second and moved up a position in the ranking, finishing 6th. The Midget Boys 4x100m
Relay team, Brett Silcox, Travis Mann, Chris day and Rhett Lucas, ran their best time of the season to finish in 6th place.
Taylor, Rhett and the Midget Boys Relay team all qualified for the OFSAA Regionals. They will be at TD Waterhouse Stadium once more next Friday and Saturday, as their competition season continues.
