Congratulations to the Junior Girls Soccer Team on their gold medal performance in the Huron-Perth Championship.
After a 4 - 1 win in the semifinals against Listowel the Lady Lukes came to the finals defending their pitch and gunning for gold against the very strong South Huron Panthers.
With the strong wind against them in the first half the Jr. Salukis should have been on the defensive but decided to press the play into the Panthers end. With continual pressure the team was able to score two goals in the half, the first from Shauna Simpson, her fourth for the day, and the other from scrappy forward Rebecca Nagle.
Throughout the first half the Panthers were limited to any quality scoring chances because of strong defensive play from defenders Ally Alderson, Rachel Brommer, Kristen Schmidt and Hannah Schmidt.
At the start of the second half a breakdown in communication resulted in South Huron getting there a quality scoring chance which they knocked home for their lone goal of the day.
For the remainder of the game, with the wind behind their backs the Jr. Salukis dominated the pitch. Midfielders Taylor Simpson, Marnie Snoek, Laura Vandewalle, Lauren Arts, Cally Schaefer were a wall throughout the entire game. Forwards Emily McHendry and Rebecca Wilcox were a constant threat. It was the strong play from the midfield that allowed Rebecca Wilcox to score the Lukes third and decisive goal in the second half.
The final piece in the Lukes championship puzzle was the stellar play from keeper Taylor Fawcett. In the finals it was Fawcett who made several spectacular saves, one off a penalty kick, that sealed the Junior Salukis Huron-Perth Championship.
Congratulations to Mr. Seebach and the entire team on a fantastic season and their Huron-Perth Championship!
