Breakfast of Champions

On Friday, October 28th, the DCVI community acknowledged the diligent work of 25 students who were selected by their teachers as hard working and positive students in the classroom.  These students were treated to a free "Breakfast of Champions" at the start of the school day before returning to class.  

We hope to make this a monthly event, with teachers selecting different students throughout the year who put an admirable effort into their class work, and are always striving to do things to the best of their ability.

Congratulations to our first group of champions!

College & University Bound Students

How to Apply to College & University Workshops

Student services will host "How to Apply" workshops for parents and students planning on applying to college or university for September 2012.  The sessions will run on Thursday October 27 in conjunction with Parent-Teacher interviews.   The "Applying to College" session will begin at 6:00pm and the "Applying to University" session will begin at 6:45pm.   Both workshops will take place in Room 230.  All parents and students are wlcome to attend these workshops. 

College Information Program

Senior students considering college are reminded of the College Information Program being held at Conestoga College on Thursday October 27.  All Ontario colleges will have representatives available to answer questions and distribute literature.  Students are invited to pick up a permission form in Student Services if they would like to attend.  The cost is $10 to help cover the cost of the bus.  The bus will depart DCVI at 8:45am and return at approximately 12:45pm.

Grade 10 Field Trip to Fanshawe Pioneer Village

On Friday Oct 7 2011, Miss Jewson's grade 10 class went to Fanshawe Pioneer Village to experience various facets of life for Canadians during the First World War.  We had beautiful weather, and a fabulous day!

End Polio Now Campaign

Global Voices is teaming up with Rotary International and their End Polio Now Campaign.

Polio is a crippling disease that affects mainly children.  Rotary International has helped wipe polio off the map in over 100 countries in the last 20 years.  However, as long as it remains, the threat remains for children everywhere. 

It takes less than $1 to pay for a vaccination for a child. 

 

Watch for Global Voices members who will be collecting donations on Friday October 21 and Friday October 28.  You can help End Polio NOW. 

Besa Abuse and Paul Wellhauser Visit DCVI

BESA AND PAUL PRESENTATION

Thanks to Besa Abuse and Paul Wellhauser who visited DCVI today and shared their stories about the San and other Southern African Cultures.  Besa is Deputy Coordinator of the Omaheke San Trust in Namibia and Paul owns a fair trade store called Nharo! in Toronto. Along with information about the issues and challenges that indigenous communities in this part of the world face, Paul and Besa discussed many of the positive initiatives they are involved in which help support awareness, education, environmental stewardship, clean water projects, and the conservation of language, culture and traditions.

Grade 12 Students

Lots of updates for grade 12 students have been made on the Student Services Blog.  Make sure you check it frequently!

Android Phone?

The Grade 10 Computer Studies class is using App Inventor to create apps for Android cell phones.  The students can test their applications on an emulator on the computer but some apps, like those that involve sensing movement of the phone, obviously won't work.  If you have an Android phone and would like to try some of the apps, come to Room 242.  If you have an old Android phone you'd like to donate, that would be fantastic (don't need phone service, we just need the device).

School Council Meetings

Parents, community members and school staff are all invited to attend School Council Meetings.  The meeting dates for the 2011/2012 school year are as follows:

November 2, 6:30 in the DCVI library

January 25, 6:30 in the DCVI library

April 18, 6:30 in the DCVI library

June 13, 6:30 in the DCVI library
