In the spirit of the season, bring in new hats and mittens and add them to the tree in the front foyer.  The new hats and mittens will be given to those who would be facing the cold winter without.

Today I AM SILENT

Today over 130 DCVI students and teachers have taken a vow of silence. Why?  Around the world, some children are silenced by hunger, others by lack of education.  Some are forced to work as child labourers and are punished for speaking out against unsafe & unfair work conditions.  Some live in the midst of conflict, others are affected by disease.

Today, we stand in silence together with those children who have no voice due to hunger, oppression and violence.

Vow of Silence - Wednesday

Did you know that 215 million children worldwide are forced to work as child labourers?  Did you know that 121 million children worldwide are not receiving a formal education? (most of them are girls). Did you know that 300 million children under the age of five live in areas afftected by armed conflict?

Tomorrow is the Vow of Silence!  Join your classmates (and a few teachers) in avoiding talking, texting, email and facebook for the entire school day.  Sign up by 3pm on Tuesday and pick up your sticker on Wednesday morning. 

Stand up for children's rights around the world.  Take the Vow of Silence.

Will you take the VOW OF SILENCE?

Wednesday November 30, join people around the world who are standing up for children’s rights.  Take the Vow of Silence and make a statement by saying nothing at all.  Help give a voice to children silenced by poverty, war and oppression.  Your silence will speak to the world!

Sign up in Student Services by Tuesday @ 3pm.  Pick up your particpant stickers on Wednesday morning to let everyone know that you are silent!

Breakfast of Champions - 2

The second group of "champions", as selected by their period 2 teachers, enjoyed breakfast provided by the staff.  Will you be a member of the next "Breakfast of Champions" group?

Métis Artist Brenda Collins Works with DCVI Students

Today, November 22nd, and tomorrow, groups of DCVI students will have the opportunity to work with retired teacher and Métis artist, Brenda Collins.  Brenda was born in Spanish, Ontario and moved to the London area to attend the University of Western Ontario.  She taught elementary school and was awarded the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence in 2008.

Brenda is sharing traditional Métis and First Nation's knowledge as she guides students through the creation of a glass tile mosaic Medicine Wheel. 

Check out the progress by dropping by the Drama Room if you get a chance during breaks.  If not, look for the finished piece which will be returned to the school and placed on display later this year...

Semester 2 Dual Credit Opportunities

Grade 12 students interesting in taking a dual credit next semester should check out the list of courses on the bulletin board outside Student Services. 

Dual Credits offer students the chance to take college/apprenticeship courses that will count towards both their OSSD and a postsecondary certificate or diploma.  DCVI students have the chance to travel to Conestoga, Fanshawe or Lambton College one day per week to complete the course.
