No Cracks in the Foundation of the Junior Girls Team This Week

The juniors won 2 very intense and exciting games this week defeating South Huron 28-25 and Listowell 25-24. The team collectively had to work together both on the floor and on the sidelines to keep ahead of the competition. The girls did a great job of staying focussed and composed until the buzzer of each game. Top scorers in the South Huron game were Rachel King and Mallory Mueller supported by an outstanding defense lead by Brittany Smith and Kaitlynn Simpson. Rachel scored the team's first 3-point basket in that game. In the Listowell game, our top scorers were Brittany Smith and Mallory Mueller. Excellent all-round play from Rebecca Cumming, Laura Van DeWalle, and Samantha Anderson boosted the team to victory.

Next game is Wed. Oct.7 at St. Annes.

Cross Country Running

The XC runners ran in their first meet at Fanshawe Conservation Area this past Thursday.  We were greeted with excellent weather, to compliment the teams' great attitude.  Everyone ran a good race for the first event of the season... and for those who were not able to run due to injury, they filled roles such as "picture taker" and "line holder" (thank-you Tasha and Romy).  Pictures say more than I would like to comment, so enjoy the photos.    Good luck to the team on Thursday in Springbank Park.

Junior Girls Basketball

South Huron DHS Weekend Tournament Sept. 19, 2009

The juniors had an outstanding weekend in Exeter. They defeated Exeter in their first game 39-10. Rachel King contributed 14 points followed by Mallory Mueller with 8. Excellent defense from Brittany Smith, Samantha Anderson and Rebecca Cumming held South Huron to 10 points. Full court pressure was working well with Kristyn Armstrong and Laura Smith catching on very quickly to find the steals.

The girls played extremely well versus Parkhill in their second game. The game came down to the last basket scored by Parkhill defeating us 23-21. Mallory scored 11 points followed by Brittany with 6. Again, major contributors due to their all-round play were Sam Anderson, Kaitlynn Simpson and Laura Smith.

Tie-breaking rules were applied to the pool play resulting in St. Marys finishing first in their pool and advancing to the final. Due to the late final game, the team only had 8 players that could stay to compete. They lost in the final to Woodstock 25-19. Woodstock had 16 players on their bench and consistently win this tournament so the girls did exceptionally well keeping the outcome within reach. Special thanks to Jill Versteeg and Nicole King for staying to play.

Tryouts for all fall teams will start either the first or second week of school.  Students should listen to announcements or check the bulletin board across from the Music room for any information regarding a team they are interested in.
