Free prizes next week!

Next week will be the final Spirit Week of the year, promising lots of free prizes for everyone who participates - and it's easy!

Monday:  Holiday
STAY HOME! (sorry, no prizes for this one)

Tuesday:  Athletic Pride
Wear your favourite team jersey or gear, whether it be from a school team, local team, or professional team.

Dodgeball for any who dare at lunch in the large gym.  Be brave!

Wednesday:  Academic Pride
Show your smarts by answering a Jeopardy question in the lobby and win prizes!

Thursday: Arts Pride
Show your artsy side by dressing with flashy colour, wearing a shirt showing your favourite band/singer, belting out some tunes (or merely listening to them) etc.
Look for student art work showcased around the school with information about DCVI artists.

Friday:  School and Individual Pride
Wear school colours (red/white) and/or clothing!
Share your pride on paper in the lobby.
                                                                                                                              

 

Junior girls soccer split

The junior girls soccer team split their games yesterday against South Huron and Stratford Central. In their first game against South Huron the lady lukes dominated the game, outshooting their opponents 33-3, but came out on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline. The DCVI goal was scored by Emily Woodhouse. St. Marys also hit 3 posts, a couple crossbars and had several other near misses. A tough first loss of the season. DCVI kept up their strong play in their second game vs. Stratford Central, who came into the game without a loss. The Salukis controlled much of the ball and again had numerous good chances to score. This time however 2 found the net and DCVI held for a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory. Goals were scored by Woodhouse and Shauna Simpson. The teams record now stands at 4 wins 1 loss.

Mental Health Week

Get exercise: Regular physical activity is good for the mind. It can even reduce depression and anxiety. Joining an exercise group or gym is even better because it connects you with others.

Wednesday's TIP

Enjoy hobbies: A hobby helps bring balance to your life. You're doing something because you want to, rather than because you have to. No pressure. It's a form of mental stimulation too.

Family Trees with a twist!

Students in Grade 9 (Academic) Geography completed a family tree project with a twist.  The focus of this project was where (geographically) various members of the family have lived.  The map below illustrates some of the locations included in the students' family trees.

Coop Applications

Did you sign up to take cooperative education next year?  If so, pick up your application package in Student Services.  Interviews are being held on Thursday morning, and you need to bring your completed application with you.  Read all of the information in your package carefully.

Mental Health Week

Tuesday's Tip:

Learn how to cope with negative thoughts: Negative thoughts can be insistent and loud: don't let them take over. Distract yourself or comfort yourself if you can't solve a problem right away. Try seeing the issue from all sides rather than from just one point of view.

Mental Health Week - May 7-13, 2012

Did you know that 1 in 5 children struggles with a mental health issue – this means 20 children in every 100 and that adds up to many children in a school or community.

Throughout the week we will post some tips for practicing "mental fitness", which will support your own personal mental health!

MONDAY's Tip: 

Be in the present: When you're out for a walk or socializing, turn off the cell phone and take in all the sights and sounds around you. Smell the roses!

Interested in Student Council Next Year?

Student Council is the chance for you to have your voice heard and influence decisions made for the student body.  As a Student Council member, you represent your peers and classmates, and work to make DCVI an even better place.  This requires your commitment to attend lunch meetings once a week next year.

Descriptions of various Student Council positions are available in the office now, for anyone interested in being part of the Executive.  Application forms are also available in the office, and are due Monday, May 14th.  

This is a great opportunity to get involved!
