February 28, 2011 - ENG 2P

Snow/Frozen Road Day.

Students are reminded that they need to have selected a story, either from Sightlines of from the GoogleDocs folder shared with the class. The story should be read and summarized for tomorrow so we can begin the work of creating the media project using the webpages on  your assignment sheet.

ENG 4U - Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010 - The Social Network

As we come to the end of the media theory unit and prepare to start Hamlet we will take a day to see The Social Network on Thursday in London. The film is connected to some of the ideas studied as we looked at the modern media.

The trip is optional. $14.

ENG 4U - October, 25, 2010

Students will work in groups of four to create a multi media presentation on the media theories of Marshall McLuhan and Noam Chomsky.  The assignment will be posted to Google Document accounts. Research, a works cited and some citations will be expected. Research means credible cites and information (no wiki, no ask cites etc).

You must become familiar with both McLuhan "The Medium is the Message" and Chomsky's "The Propaganda Model". Here are a couple pages to get you started. Once you understand them prepare to inform the class on their relevance in hte traditional and current media. You can use ideas, events, inventions of history to apply the terms if that helps as well.

The Medium is the Message

Global Village (McLuhan warning of tribal behaviour)

McLuhan Effect of Media

Chomsky

Myth of Liberal Media

Manufacturing Consent pt 1 (Introduction and Concept of Illusion in media)

Manufacturing Consent 2 - (Elite media and Propaganda Model)

Manufacturing Consent Part 3 - A Case Study

(Some research will show The Propaganda Model applied to more current events. Look and you will find this information).

Manufacturing Consent 4 - Media Editing Itself

Manufacturing Consent 5 - Debate with Chomsky

Manufacturing Consent 6 - Agenda Driven Media

Why Propaganda Works

ENG 2P - October 8, 2010

The end of our first group novel study will come tomorrow as students will hand in the work they have done for the various roles that went into the project.

I am pleased to say all students in the room finished their books and there was some really positive discussion involving the reading.

Next week we will be starting our whole class novel Crabbe by William Bell which will lead to some research projects, a test and a five paragraph essay.

We will also have a comprehension test on a story.

ENG 4U - September 15, 2010

Students in my class are asked to check the list of blogs that are linked in the 4U Blogs page. If yours is not there it either does not exist or you have not sent me the link. It is time to get this done.

There is a link to blogger.com through your google documents account that we are using to share files in this class. Keep in mind though the (yourname)@ed.amdsb.ca is only a file sharing account and not a blog.

Look for your name here 4U Blogs

ENG 2P - Week One (September 7-10)

ENG 2P started quite well this week and the class accomplished some work. We looked at exaggerations, a story that focuses on setting and review on nouns.

I am hopeful that by the end of next week we will have signed out the novels for small group studies. Parents or students with questions are welcome to post a message to this blog and I will reply as soon as possible.

Stay tuned for updates next week as the course gets into full swing.
